She lived in a time when women could not even own property and yet she managed to write political works in league with the likes of Thomas Paine, have a secret romance with a woman, and a torrid love affair with a handsome, if dubious, diplomat. What followed were centuries of defamations, smears, violent battles, and an idea that would never truly fade.
